Organic black cumin seeds are known by many different names. The botanical name is Nigella Sativa, but is also called black seed, black cumin, nigella or even Kalonji.
The plant itself comes from the same family as the butter cup and has striking white and blue flowers. The seeds themselves are grown in a pod after flowering that bursts open when dried to scatter the seed far and wide.
Black cumin seeds have been used in many ways over the years with both medicinal uses as well as culinary. Seeds have been found in use as far back as ancient Egypt and before. The medicinal effects of these tiny seeds are many and varied. They are packed with antioxidants which have a powerful effect on a persons’ general health. It is also said to lower cholesterol, fight infections, reduce inflammation and even help protect the liver.
USES: In cooking, the black cumin seed is often used in curry based dishes, when toasted and ground into a powder and they can also be added to bread products to give and extra peppery kick. The seeds can be eaten raw or even added to omeletes, oatmeal or even yoghurt dishes.
